Challenges
Located at the end of the distribution circuit, the customer’s operation experienced instability in voltage and in the electrical parameters. These variations triggered load losses that, in turn, affected hydrocarbon production.
In the meantime, the customer had added electrical load to the water injection into the reservoir by using electric pumps. This new load profile was not supplied. The customer had both diesel and LPG available. He needed 28MW of power as quickly as possible at a competitive price.
Due to the availability of fuel in the region, the pricing became a key challenge. LPG is composed of 50% butane and 50% propane and has a higher calorific value than natural gas. This fuel stays in gaseous state at room temperature, but remains liquid when stored at a certain pressure.
This project represented the first large-scale portable LPG power generation plant in Latin America.
Solution
At SoEnergy, we have more than 20 years of experience in the use of turbogenerators for industrial applications in the oil and gas sector around the world. We have a deep understanding of the performance and capabilities of our mobile turbogenerators fleet. By using this experience, we designed an LPG plant that would use turbines to ensure the client’s electrical system to achieve reliability and stability.
Our engineers completed a rigorous analysis together with the equipment’s manufacturer to ensure that we used the most cost-effective fuel and converted the equipment in record time.
SoEnergy supplied all engineering, main and auxiliary equipment, logistics, civil works, installation, commissioning services, operation and maintenance of the plant. This turnkey solution was delivered in record time with mobile equipment while taking into account power variations in the field. In the first stage, electric power was supplied by five 20MW turbogenerators. This was later expanded to eight 32MW turbogenerators.
A highly flexible power solution, since our power generation plant consisted of turbogenerators that used LPG to create electrical power.
Results
We supported our client in the construction of the first large-scale portable LPG power plant in Latin America. This solution being delivered under our Energy as a Service model, provides 99% power reliability and a 97% plant capacity at a competitive cost.
