Challenges
The crude oil in Colombia was usually heavy and a water pumping system demanding a large amount of energy was required. The water-to-crude oil ratio was very high, above 95%, and required 1MW of power for every 1,000 barrels of oil produced.
The remote location of the project also posed a challenge, as it was not connected to the national net. The client required a power generation solution that would support the target crude oil production of 200,000 barrels per day. Due to high oil prices at the time, this solution had to be delivered quickly.

Solution
We provided a no capital expenditure solution for this all-new project of power generation. We structured a BOMT (Build, Operate, Maintain and Transfer) contract with no risk to the client. Our engineers delivered reliable quality power that allowed the client to achieve the planned production levels. We converted the BOMT to an operation and maintenance contract once the power solution was up and running.
Along the way, our engineers solved key logistical challenges, such as transportation, permissions and managmet of communities in rural areas while keeping this fast-track project on schedule.
We also led the financing of the project through IFC. Our solution met the complex standards of environmental policies and the surrounding rural communities.
Our engineers delivered reliable quality power that allowed the client to achieve the planned production levels.
Results
We delivered our client a reliable power generation solution over 160MW that allowed to reach overall production targets of 200,000 B/D. Thanks to our Energy as a Service model, our client was able to allocate 100% of its budget to oil and gas production without facing technical, logistical or financial challenges.
